Match the card to the job

A strong credit-card comparison begins with what you want the account to do. Flat-rate cash back rewards simplicity; travel cards can justify an annual fee when credits and transfer options match your habits; and intro-APR cards are designed around temporary financing rather than long-term borrowing.

Do not choose on headline points alone. A large welcome offer can be poor value if the spending requirement encourages purchases you would not otherwise make.

  • Everyday rewards: prioritize the earning rate on uncategorized spending and a low or zero annual fee.
  • Travel: compare annual fee, travel credits, transfer partners, foreign-transaction fees and redemption rules.
  • Intro APR: compare the exact promotional period, balance-transfer window and transfer fee.
  • Credit building: prioritize approval fit, fees, reporting and a path to graduate from secured credit if applicable.

Current shortlist by use case

Chase Freedom Unlimited currently carries no annual fee and earns 1.5% on general purchases, with higher rates on Chase Travel, dining and drugstores. Chase Sapphire Preferred carries a $95 annual fee and adds travel-oriented earning, an annual Chase Travel hotel credit and no foreign transaction fee.

Capital One Venture X is a premium $395 card with elevated rewards through Capital One Travel, 2 miles per dollar on other purchases, a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit and anniversary miles. Discover it Cash Back has no annual fee, rotating 5% categories when activated up to the quarterly cap, and Cashback Match for the first year.

How Plandime avoids a fake number-one card

Credit-card economics vary by spending pattern, redemption behavior, credit profile and how much value you place on benefits. Plandime therefore publishes winners by scenario and timestamps issuer terms instead of presenting one card as permanently best.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How many credit cards should I have?

There is no ideal number for everyone. Use only as many accounts as you can manage on time and in full, and consider how new applications, account age and utilization may affect your credit profile.

Should I pay an annual fee for a credit card?

Only when the rewards and benefits you expect to use exceed the fee by a comfortable margin without changing your spending behavior.
