How We Rate Products

There is no universal best financial product. Our methodology starts with the use case, then weighs the costs, benefits and friction that matter for that reader.

1. Define the decision

We first identify the reader’s objective: for example, maximize simple cash back, reduce borrowing cost, earn more on emergency savings or minimize account fees.

2. Verify the terms

We collect material terms from primary sources and record when they were checked. Product data should be refreshed before a page is materially updated or republished.

3. Weight what matters

Criteria vary by category. A rewards card may emphasize annual fee, rewards structure and redemption friction, while a savings account may emphasize APY, fees, minimums and access.

4. Explain the trade-off

A ranking without reasoning is not enough. Each recommendation should say who it is for, who should skip it and which compromise the reader is accepting.
