Three different travel-card lanes
Travel-card comparisons become clearer when cards are separated by fee level. A no-fee card can be excellent for occasional international spending, while a mid-tier card may add transfer partners and travel protections, and a premium card may layer lounge or travel-credit value on top.
The annual fee should be treated as a real cash expense. Subtract only benefits you are highly likely to use at face value.
Current primary-source snapshot
Chase Sapphire Preferred currently lists 5x on Chase Travel, 3x on dining and selected categories, 2x on other travel, a $100 annual Chase Travel hotel credit and no foreign transaction fee. Capital One Venture X lists 10x on hotels and rental cars through Capital One Travel, 5x on flights and vacation rentals through the portal, 2x elsewhere, a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit and 10,000 anniversary miles.
Bank of America Travel Rewards has no annual fee or foreign transaction fee and earns unlimited 1.5 points per dollar on purchases; issuer terms should be rechecked immediately before publication because offers and promotional APRs can change.
Watch redemption rules, not just earning rates
Two cards earning the same headline number can produce different value because points may have different redemption paths, transfer partners and restrictions. Compare how you actually plan to use rewards before choosing.

Is a premium travel card worth it?
It can be when you would naturally use enough recurring credits and benefits to offset the annual fee. Do not count benefits you would not otherwise buy.
Do travel cards charge foreign transaction fees?
Many travel-focused cards waive them, but not all cards do. Check the current issuer pricing before using a card abroad.
