Marcus: the yield-focused choice in this comparison

Marcus pays the highest standard APY in this three-account comparison, with no minimum deposit and no account fee. At an unchanged 3.40% APY, a $10,000 balance would earn $340 over a full year, before taxes and with no additions or withdrawals. That is $40 more than at 3.00% under the same assumptions.

The access trade-off is concrete: Marcus does not provide a debit or ATM card for its savings account. It offers transfers, so plan how money will reach the account you use to pay an emergency bill. Marcus account FAQs

Marcus advertises same-day processing for transfers of $100,000 or less requested through Marcus by noon Eastern on a business day, with conditions. The receiving bank determines when an outgoing transfer becomes available there. Do not interpret this as guaranteed instant access. Marcus transfer conditions

Consider it if: the standard yield matters to you and a transfer-based withdrawal route fits your needs.

Think twice if: you need direct ATM access to this savings balance or would move money repeatedly for a small annual advantage.

Capital One: the branch-access choice

Capital One's 360 Performance Savings account offers withdrawals online or at a branch, but it does not allow direct ATM withdrawals from the savings account. For ATM access, money must first move to an appropriate checking account. Check whether useful branches actually exist near you. Capital One savings features

Its 3.00% APY produces an illustrative $300 on $10,000 over one year if unchanged. The account has no monthly service charge and no minimum balance required to earn the disclosed APY.

Some deposits are not immediately available. Capital One's disclosure generally makes certain check and bank-initiated ACH deposits available on the fourth business day, with exceptions and potential longer delays. It also states that a contractual six-transfer limit is currently not enforced. That is the bank's policy, not a universal federal limit. Capital One account terms

Consider it if: branch access or your existing banking workflow is worth more to you than the $40 illustrative annual yield difference on $10,000.

Think twice if: the nearest useful branch is inconvenient and your only reason for choosing it is a higher savings rate; Marcus has the higher standard rate in this shortlist on the verification date.

American Express: another online option

American Express National Bank offers a 3.00% standard APY, no monthly fee, and no minimum balance for the disclosed APY. That matches Capital One's standard yield on the verification date. American Express HYSA

It is a transfer-oriented savings account. Debit cards are for American Express checking accounts, not this HYSA. The provider advertises external transfers in one to two business days, subject to cutoffs and holidays, but deposited money can face a longer hold before withdrawal. American Express support, deposit agreement and savings schedules

Consider it if: its online savings workflow suits you after you check transfer limits and availability.

Think twice if: you need direct savings ATM access or are expecting it to beat the other two accounts on the verified standard APY. It does not do so in this comparison.

Who can apply?

All three providers offered public application routes when checked, subject to identity verification and approval. These are personal accounts, not business-account recommendations.

These summaries are not exhaustive and do not promise approval. Read the applicable Marcus agreement, Capital One disclosure, or American Express agreement for exact requirements.

Compare earnings and access separately

These are constant-rate illustrations using the checked APYs, not forecasts. They exclude taxes, fees, and balance changes. A small dollar difference may not justify a withdrawal arrangement you cannot comfortably use.

For the access comparison, answer a different question: If I needed to pay a bill tomorrow, what exact sequence would get the money there? Include holidays, transfer limits, new-deposit holds, and the account you use to make the payment. Test that route with a small amount before depending on it for urgent expenses.

The Federal Reserve removed Regulation D's federal six-transfer restriction in 2020. Individual banks can retain restrictions, so read the specific agreement rather than assuming every savings account has the same monthly limit. Federal Reserve savings-deposit FAQs

How we made these selections

We screened Marcus, Capital One, American Express, and Ally for this review. The ranked set contains the first three. We prioritized standard yield, recurring costs, minimums, eligibility, deposit structure, and withdrawal practicality. We selected by use case rather than assigning a synthetic score to convenience.

Marcus wins the standard-yield comparison within that set. Capital One's documented branch withdrawal option supports the branch-access selection. American Express remains an alternative, without an invented exclusive advantage. We did not test customer service or open accounts.

Ally is unranked because its live site returned an outage during verification and the accessible comparison text had an earlier rate date. That does not establish that the account is unavailable or inferior. This review also excludes CDs, money market deposit accounts, nonbank cash-management programs, membership-restricted accounts, and products outside the named research set. Other accounts may offer better rates or fit your needs better.

Promotions do not determine these selections. A referral boost or targeted rate would require a separate comparison of qualification rules, duration, and the standard rate afterward. No affiliate compensation information was used as a ranking input.

Before moving emergency savings

Confirm the exact bank holding your deposit and count any other deposits you have there. FDIC's standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category—not per account. FDIC deposit insurance FAQs

Read the provider's current disclosure, confirm the rate applicable to you, and check the transfer route. American Express has also published savings-schedule changes effective October 18, 2026; review the schedule applicable when you open or use the account.

American Express high-yield savings: what to check

American Express describes its High Yield Savings Account as having no monthly fees or minimum balance requirement. Its APY is variable, so verify the rate on the provider’s page when you apply and compare the same day’s offers. A credit card rewards offer and a savings APY are different products.

Check how you will transfer money to the account and how you will retrieve it for an emergency. The timing of an external transfer can matter more than a small difference in annual yield. Start with a small test transfer and keep near-term bills in an account you can access on time.
