What makes an online bank genuinely useful

A high savings APY can attract attention, but a bank becomes a good primary relationship only when transfers, ATM access, customer support, account fees and overdraft policies also fit your routine.

Rates are variable. Plandime therefore treats APYs as timestamped data rather than permanent product characteristics.

Ally snapshot

Ally currently lists 3.00% APY on Savings, no monthly maintenance fees and no account minimums. Its Spending account lists 0.10% APY below $15,000 and 0.25% at $15,000 or more, plus access to Allpoint and MoneyPass ATMs and up to $10 per statement cycle in reimbursement for other domestic ATM fees.

Capital One 360 snapshot

Capital One 360 Checking currently says there are no fees to open, keep or use the account and no foreign transaction fee from Capital One. It also gives customers overdraft choices including Auto-Decline, Free Savings Transfer and no-fee overdraft.

Capital One 360 Performance Savings says there is no monthly fee and no minimum balance. Its web page renders the live APY dynamically, so our current draft deliberately avoids printing a number we cannot verify consistently.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Are online banks safe?

Look for FDIC insurance eligibility and verify the bank and deposit terms directly. Deposit insurance limits and ownership categories matter, especially for larger balances.

Do online-bank savings rates stay fixed?

Usually not. Savings APYs are variable and can change, which is why Plandime timestamps rate checks.
